WARSAW, Poland (AP) - The death toll from freezing temperatures in Poland this winter has reached 172, three times more than last season, police reported Tuesday.

The latest victim, a 55-year-old man, was found covered in ice on Monday near a small village in eastern Poland. Reportedly drunk, he fell into a stream and froze when he got out.

Cold weather hit Poland Nov. 16, with temperatures dropping to minus 4. The cold snap eased around Christmas, but temperatures dropped below freezing again in early January. Most of the victims have been men ages 40 to 60 who were drinking before they died.

Police recorded 54 cold-related deaths last winter.
